Tom Warrender has article published by University of Northampton Law Society Bulletin

I’m proud to have written this article for the University of Northampton Law Society Newsletter, and I hope it helps inspire the next generation of lawyers.

My own journey into law began at the University of Northampton (UCN as it was then); over the past 20+ years, I’ve seen my career develop from Trainee Solicitor to Associate, and eventually to Partner and Board Member.

I’m very proud of my role at Wilson Browne Solicitors, particularly as a firm with offices across Northamptonshire and Leicester, as somebody who studied in this area.  Looking back, I never had a clear idea of exactly what area of law I would end up in, but I always knew I wanted to be a solicitor. If I had asked myself then what I would be doing now, I would never have guessed commercial property law; yet here I am, and I’m delighted to have found a career I enjoy so much.

My advice to students is to keep an open mind, make the most of every opportunity, and try as many experiences as possible. A broad education is important, but so is gaining work experience and exploring different routes into the profession. Every path into law is different, and there is no single right answer.  I also believe it’s important to understand that a legal career is about more than academic knowledge. Commercial awareness, adaptability, and the ability to build relationships and contribute to a wider business are all essential skills. These qualities have helped shape my own career, and I believe they are increasingly important for the lawyers of the future.

I’m proud to have been shortlisted for Lawyer of the Year at the Northamptonshire Law Society Awards twice in my career, and to have been recognised in the Legal 500 for both commercial property and social housing work. I’ve also been named a Leading Partner by the Legal 500 too, which is something I’m extremely proud of. One of my standout moments was helping to host, with colleagues, a commercial property networking event in Cannes, and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Although studying law can sometimes feel daunting, it is also an incredibly exciting time. To anyone thinking about a career in law, my message is simple: stay open-minded, work hard, and take every opportunity that comes your way, because the possibilities really are endless.
