Government publishes response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s Phase 1 report

On 20 and 21 January 2020, the government announced a raft of measures aimed at improving building safety in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, covering:

  • The immediate establishment of the Building Safety Regulator
  • Updated guidance for building owners on building safety
  • Extending the cladding ban in England to a wider range of buildings and materials
  • Its response to the Grenfell Tower public inquiry’s phase one report, which includes useful information about the forthcoming Fire Safety Bill
  • Steps to ensure that remedial works to existing buildings are not delayed any further
  • A call for evidence to define the scope of future research on fire safety risk in buildings
  • A promise to clarify its proposals for lowering the height threshold for sprinkler requirements in new buildings in February 2020
