Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a condition affecting the retinal blood vessels of pre-term babies. It can cause partial or total blindness.

The medical negligence team identified in the early 1990’s in Kettering General Hospital that there were a number of cases where the KGH team failed to monitor or manage the oxygen therapy given to premature babies resulting in hypoxia and/or oxygen fluctuations.

As a result of a failure to implement the national guideline recommendations for screening, blindness resulted in some premature babies.

The team were able to link the cases in which they were instructed – identifying a pattern of failings in relation to the treatment of pre-term babies.  A local publicity claim identified a number of other children affected by the condition and successful claims have been made for them.
