On 7 February 2020, Public Health England (PHE) published “Using the planning system to promote healthy weight environments” – available here
The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) makes it clear that local planning authorities (LPAs) have a responsibility to promote healthy and safe communities by fostering a well-designed and safe built environment, with accessible services and open spaces that reflect current and future needs and support communities’ health and well-being. The NPPF sets out explicit policy requirements pertinent to promoting healthy weight environments.
This PHE guidance aims to provide practical support for LPAs to use the planning system to create healthier eating and promote physical activities through adopting appropriate planning policies.
