The first update on the number of employment disputes has been released by Acas since the abolition of employment tribunal fees in July 2017. This update specifies the number of employment disputes that have been notified to for early conciliation in the 6 months between April and December 2017.
Between the start of April and the end of July, Acas notes that it received around 1,700 notifications per week. During the period and since the end of July the number of notifications has increased significantly to around 2,200 per week.
Continuing this trend, since 28 August 2017, Acas states there has been a 57% increase in employment tribunal claim forms (ET1) and a 25% increase in early conciliation notifications compared with the same period in 2016. The trend is consistent with the employment tribunal statistics for October to December 2017 which show employment tribunal claims increasing by 90% compared to the same quarter in 2017 as published by the Ministry of Justice on 8 March 2018.
